Tone is as important as language in reference to the dialogue between the characters in the novel. Between Winona and Jas, for example, the tone they take belies the stage Winona is at in her growth because she demonstrates nervousness and shyness earlier on in the novel when she meets with Jas in town. These shy moments advance the narrative because John and Thomas then jump in on Winona’s behalf to keep her away from Jas and try to protect her.
