Consider age and wisdom vs. youth and enthusiasm. The two main characters exhibit an age-old struggle, the young versus the old. Joe Leaphorn is an accomplished law enforcement officer. He has had a long and acclaimed career, and he has attained near legendary status in the Navajo Tribal Police. His every action exudes a sense of confidence. He thinks before he acts. While he is capable of definitive action, Joe Leaphorn is never impulsive. He has had a wife, a home, and a successful career. Joe Leaphorn is worthy of emulation.
