Why is Mason desperate to find his lost suitcase in the novel, A Tangle of Knots?

In the novel's opening pages, Mason is carrying a rare and expensive powder blue suitcase, which has the inheritance slip from his mother. When he loses the suitcase he becomes desperate and spends the rest of his life searching for it. To him, the suitcase represents his hope for the future.
