Why does Toby adopt Cady in the novel, A Tangle of Knots?

Toby and his wife, Caroline, had a little girl before Caroline passed away. He gave up their daughter because he was afraid that he couldn’t care for her. Toby always felt guilty about abandoning his child, which is the reason he decided to adopt Cady.
