What is the difference between being "Talented" and being "Fair" in the novel, A Tangle of Knots?

When someone is Talented, it means they have an ability they are born with that they are naturally perfect with. People who are Fair don’t have any sort of Talent. Being Talented essentially determines what someone does with their life. Marigold frets that she doesn’t have a talent, but her mother doesn’t think it’s that bad. She remembers when she was Fair and all the different things she was able to do. To her, being Fair represented freedom, since she was able to choose what she wanted to do with her life, and wasn’t just born into something.
