Horence is a creature that lives outside the academy, and he symbolizes the persecution of humans against anyone with magic. He also symbolizes how far Madame Weatherberry is willing to go to recover her lost love. When people realized Madame Weatherberry had magical powers, they set out to burn her at the stake but ended up only killing Horence. She tried to bring him back, but the magic was so dark that he wound up being a creature rather than a man, and he lives outside the estate, protecting those inside.
