What is the Island of the Dead in the novel, A Tale for the Time Being?

The Island of the Dead is the nickname of the island where Ruth and Oliver live. Ruth finds it an apt name because she brought her mother there to die and also brought her father's ashes. When her mother died, she interred both of her parents' ashes in the local cemetery.
