Who is Pran Kapoor from A Suitable Boy: A Novel and what is their importance?

Pran Kapoor is Savita's husband. He is a professor at the Brahmpur University. Although from an upper caste, Pran is dark complexioned. Even at his wedding to Savita, some guests are overheard to gossip about Mrs. Rupa Mehra's likely "black grand babies."
