Language is used as an indication of class distinction in the play. While all of the characters speak with a southern dialect and colloquialisms, there are obvious differences between the style of speaking of Blanche and the other characters in the play. Blanche’s history as an English teacher is partly responsible for her affected speech, as is her status as a wealthy Southern debutante. Stella, while of the same class as Blanche, speaks with a more informal language, illustrating her transition from the world of the Old South to that of the industrial working class.
