Direwolves from A Storm of Swords are a type of wolf that are super-sized. They had nearly died off in the decades before these novels take place. A litter of them was found by Ned Stark and each child was given one to raise since it was the family's family crest. Additionally, the children to Ned Stark are able to slide their spirits inside of the wolves to see as they see.
