Pearce congratulates Byron on his engagement. Then he tells Byron that if he is not able to perform on his wedding night, he will be happy to assist. Eugenie hears what he says, and she screams and collapses. Byron feels as though he has no choice but to challenge Pearce to a duel to defend Eugenie's honor.
