Lucien would like Rosalie to marry Laurent Tournier. Lucien is the colored son of Alphonse Tournier the owner of La Fleur Blanche Plantation and a banker's daughter. Laurent and his mother were sent to France where Laurent was educated in engineering, sciences, and French culture. When Laurent returned to St. James, it was known that he held patents in farming innovations. Lucien thinks if Rosalie marries Laurent, Laurent can help rescue his farm.
