Bayard Guilbert could not marry his love, the daughter of a vineyard owner in France. He went to Saint-Domingue and gained prosperity. When he returned to France to marry, his intended had already married, had a child, and died. Bayard decided he would have her daughter. The girl, Sylvie, was 13 and in a convent. He paid a broker to arrange the marriage.
