Jane is riding her horse when she meets Pearce and Byron on the road. She tells Pearce that she is taking lessons from Madame Sylvie so she can ride her horse. She tells Pearce that she is not pleased to make his acquaintance and she will not like being in his company. She says that her mother is French Creole, and her father is English. She does not wish to be called mademoiselle, just Jane. She tells him she will not say it was a pleasure to meet him. Then she rides off.
