Hatuey was a native leader. He fled from Hispaniola to Cuba with his people in order to escape the Spaniards, who were killing or enslaving all the natives they came across. Unfortunately, he was tracked down and tortured. Hatuey refused to be baptized before his death in order to ensure that he would never see another Spaniard again.
