A Separate Peace is set in the midst of WWII. The novel's main characters are separate from the war, but the war also looms ahead...... waiting for them. Thus, each of the boys is not only struggling with school and their tranformation into young men, they are also struggling with thoughts of war, combat, and perhaps losing out on the futures they envision for themselves.
