How was Tully inadvertently a matchmaker for Donna Kay and Clark?

After Tully stood Donna Kay up in Belize, Clark Gable was there to comfort her. They fell in love while Clark was helping her deal with Tully's rejection. Clark wanted to come to Punta Margarita himself to tell Tully what happened, but Donna Kay decided this was something she needed to do on her own.
