Science is a recurring idea in this novel. Vicky's father and brother are scientists, and her sister is interested in science, also. Grandfather loves to read books on science. Vicky states several times that she wishes she had a more scientific inclination, but she just isn't a natural at it like her family members. Adam points out to her that there are different ways of dealing with science. Her natural connection to the dolphins is a science in its own right. Perhaps because she is so well-read, and because she is so close to her family and listens to them, Vicky demonstrates not only an understanding of science, but also a deep connection to it.
