In the days following Columbine, Tom acted in a similar manner to Sue, plagued by a sincere denial that their son could have been capable of committing such violent acts. As the reality became clearer, however, Tom grew increasingly insular, overcome by the grief of realizing all that Dylan would never be able to accomplish because he was dead. The way in which Tom and Sue coped differed drastically and was ultimately the reason behind their split. As Sue sought out community, Tom became more and more private.
