At the end of the novel, Engelard kills Columbanus, and Brother Cadfael rectifies the situation by placing Columbanus' dead body in Saint Winifred's casket. He then returns Winifred to her grave. Columbanus' disappearance is explained by claiming that Winifred has answered Columbanus' prayer to bless him with leaving his body and joining her in death. Cadfael, of course, is doing his best to insure that as many people as possible are happy..... Prior Robert no longer has to face the shame of having a murderer amongst his brothers; Engelard is free to be with Sioned; and Saint Winifred remains in her grave.
