What are the motifs in A Monstrous Regiment of Women by Laurie R. King?

An underlying idea in the novel is also love. Throughout the novel, Mary questions whether she is in love with Holmes, or whether she simply loves him as she would love a friend or family member. By the end of the novel, Mary realizes that she is in fact in love with Holmes and that Holmes is in love with Mary. In addition, the couple marries by the end of the novel.
