How does our image of Alexander Worthington change over the course of the novel, A Master of Djinn?

Alexander is first introduced as an intelligent man who was promoted to the rank of Captain and served time in India. However, it is later revealed that Alexander barely passed his schooling and actually has no experience with a sword. Furthermore, he only led troops a single time and had to be rescued when the mission failed.
