Alderney is an actual island in the English Channel. It was evacuated during World War II for use by the Nazis. There were four concentration camps built on this island. Nearly 40,000 people died and were buried in mass graves on that island. It is noted that there have never been any non-war-related murders on the island.

Alderney is the place where Hawthorne and Horowitz attend a literary festival as a practice for larger festivals. Horowitz learns only after they have arrived on the island that Hawthorne wanted to come because Abbott, a man he was unable to prove was dealing in child pornography, was living. Horowitz fears at first that Hawthorne might have wanted to come to the island to kill Abbott. Instead, Charles and his wife, Helen, are killed.
