The beauty of both the fjord and the climb can be seen as metaphors for the author's general happiness and satisfaction with his life before his accident. On the other hand, his tortured journey down the mountain following his injury can be seen as a metaphor for and a foreshadowing of the equally torturous experience of recovery he endures following treatment of his injury.
