The general structure of the book is linear, with the narrative of events moving in a straightforward fashion. For the most part, this structure functions effectively, taking the reader along for the ride on the author's journey of physical healing and emotional, spiritual and intellectual transformation. In contrast to the other, more subjectively narrated content and style of the other six chapters, chapter seven and the Afterword, both read like a summary of a research paper or thesis rather than a memoir, which the first part of the book clearly seems to be.
