Aunt Dorothy was a friend of Kitty's mother who lives in London, and she agrees that Kitty should stay with her to be introduced to London society. Dorothy is not actually related but is an “honorary aunt.” She had amassed a lot of money by the time she was in her 40s, changed her name and dyed her hair, and rebranded herself as the widowed Mrs. Kendall. Dorothy initially tries to curb Kitty's determination to find someone really rich, feeling that it is out of the realm of possibility and could end in disaster. She eventually puts all her energy into supporting Kitty's plan. Kitty learns near the end of the story that Dorothy had met a man she knew years earlier and married in a private ceremony during a weekend away from London.
