Known to friends as Archie, he is the son of the Dowager Countess Lady Radcliffe. Kitty sees him for the first time at the theater, but Dorothy warns that he is out of the realm of possibility for a husband, but Kitty manufactures an opportunity to meet him. She is quickly able to capture Archie's affection and his promise of a proposal. Overall, Archie is naive and immature. He is easily led into situations, evidenced by the fact that he almost loses his fortune to Lord Selbourne. He changes very little over the course of the novel and expresses his relief outright when he learns that Kitty does not want to marry him.
