In Chapter One of the novel, A House Divided, why does Yuan feel trapped?

Yuan feels trapped by his father's controlling behavior. His father is a fierce warlord who has always been very aggressive and ready to fight. Yuan left the war school because he felt conflicted over his love and hatred for his father. His own emotions trap him by tying him back to his father.
