Why is it not surprising that a monotheistic Deity such as Yahweh was his people's protector?

Given the necessity for survival under repeated attacks by their neighbors and forced into exile in places such as Babylon, it is not surprising that the aspect of the Deity as the protector of the people emerged,and still remains a characteristic of all monotheistic religions.
