William Teys is the father of Roberta and Gillian Teys. He is Richard Gibson's uncle. Teys is murdered and it is up to Lynley and Havers to solve the case. During the course of the narrative, it is revealed that Teys is a child molester, who violated both of his daughters. It is also revealed that Teys fathered a child with one of his daughters. William Teys admitted his wrongs to Father Hart in confession, saying at one point that he had been cured. Teys was a religious fanatic. William Teys married Tessa, the girls' mother, when Tessa was sixteen years old. Teys was the owner of Gembler Farm, which he arranged to leave to his nephew, Richard Gibson, after his death.
