The author sets a very conversational tone throughout the book. She narrates as though she is talking to a friend. Since the author writes from a child's perspective, the language used is simple and the dialogue often colloquial. As a memoir, the tone is automatically going to be subjective—perhaps even more so because of the age and developmental stage of the narrator.
