Derrynane is the ancestral home of Eibhlín Dubh. Her mother ran a small smuggling operation out of the house, in order to support the family during the era of strict Penal Laws. Mrs. O’Connell visited Derrynane in the twentieth century and documented all of Máire’s belonging. However, when Doireann returns to Derrynane a century later, she is dismayed to find that only the objects of male relatives have been preserved. As a museum, Derrynane reflects the achievements of Daniel O’Connell while eradicating any trace of the women who ran the house.
