Maester Aemon from A Feast for Crows is one of the last of the Targaryon line. In order to make the choice clear and to keep violence at a low level, he joined the Night's Watch so that his brother could ascend the throne. He is very ancient and old in this book and passes away while accompanying Sam and Gilly to the Citadel.
