In A Feast for Crows, Maester Aemon has been tasked with introducing Sam to the Citadel and for pleading their case with those that will listen for some assistance at the wall. However, because of his advanced age, Aemon has developed pneumonia like symptoms. He eventually dies before completing his task. However, he realizes what an old prophecy means and tells Sam right before he dies.
