In A Feast for Crows Gilly and Sam (as well as most on the ship) drink too much to drown their sorrow. Gilly seeks comfort with Sam and he forgets his vows of celibacy. Afterward, though, he is embarrassed and ashamed, and so avoids Gilly as a way of dealing with things.
