In a Feast for Crows Sam learns from Maester Aemon that Gilly's baby is not her true child. Her real son is back at Castle Black standing in for the royal baby. The baby she has with her on the boat is Mance Rayder's son. Jon sought to protect the child from Melisandre's sorcery.
