In A Feast for Crows, Arya is told that the temple is not an orphanage and that if she wants to stay there she is going to have to work. In order to work there, she must become one of their novices, taking a vow of poverty and ridding herself of everything of value. She goes and throws everything in her pockets into the sea, but she cannot bring herself to part with Needle. She hides this, then returns to the temple.
