How did Anna's father die in the novel, A Drop in the Ocean?

Anna, her father, and his girlfriend were in Belize, when Anna was twelve. A local took Anna's father out on a dinghy to check out a dive. Later the owner of the dinghy came back without Anna's father. He said that Anna's father went for a dive and never came back. His body was never found.
