Why is the philosophical man in the Korova oblivious to what is around him? What does Alex think of him?

Alex assumes that the man in the Korova has been drinking milk with some kind of drug in it, possibly synthemesc, which is likely a type of synthetic mescaline. Alex has no respect for this man, judging by the way that he and his gang treat him. Earlier in the novel, they hit him, and when they return to the Korova, Dim kicks the man's shoe. The man fails to take any notice of this.
