Why does Alex and his gang act the way they do?

Alex and his gang seem to cause pain and suffering to others for pure enjoyment. They get a thrill out of violence and mayhem, and they are not the only ones doing what they do. Many other gangs roam the night, attacking anyone they can and often each other. It would seem that this type of behavior is normal for their generation, and is representative of the youth culture of the day.
