What does the man have planned for Alex?

The man seems to have great plans for Alex, and wants to use him as the centerpiece for his plan to overthrow, or at least bring down, the government. The man has been making a lot of telephone calls, and Alex will be meeting many of this man's friends in the coming days. Whether or not Alex wants to be part of any of this may not have occurred to the man.
