Do you feel sorry for Alex when he is beaten by the old men?

I do feel somewhat sorry for Alex, as it seems that he is starting to realize what he has done to other people and his own life. However, he does not seem sincere in his apology, and would probably fight back and kill the lot of them if he had the chance. More than anything, Alex wants to kill himself, which is a selfish way to end his problems. One of the main reasons for his suicide is to make those who know him feel sad, meaning that his final act would still be something that hurts other people.
