Mormont, Clash of Kings, gives Jon Snow his father's sword, named LongClaw. If he'd had a son he would have handed it down, but since men of the Night's Watch are not allowed to have a family or children, he feels that he'd like to give it to Jon. It is made of Valyrian Steel.
