In Chapter Fifteen, Helen goes to a meeting with her mother, after being brought home by a policeman. One of the women is a hypocrite, and although she lashes out at the woman, questioning God, Helen demonstrates the fact that she is upset with the hypocrisy and judgment of the woman, not with God himself.

Helen asks God to come into her heart after she leaves. Instead of hearing his voice, however, she hears the cry of a child, which foreshadows her impending salvation.
