In Chapter Six, James and Helen blush and become embarrassed by the fact that they are sharing a bed. In the last sentence of the chapter, James whispers that maybe the next day, she will taste an apple. This seems symbolic of the story of the Garden of Eden where Eve reportedly bit into a fruit then realized she was flesh.
