Why does Roger Whiting come up with "miscarriage" as a diagnosis for Karen's condition?

As Roger Whiting explains to John Berry, he and the team of nurses and technicians with whom he was working came up with a diagnosis of miscarriage for Karen because of her symptoms. She was bleeding profusely, and she was feverish and disoriented. From this alone, Roger determined that she had had a miscarriage.
