Why does John decline to help when he is asked if he wants to assist with Karen's autopsy?

Even though one of the doctors invites John to assist with Karen's autopsy, he declines. Since he is friends with Art Lee, John figures the police would regard his assisting with the autopsy as a conflict of interest with possible tampering of evidence.
