How do Angela and Bubbles act towards John when he meets them and asks about Karen?

When John asks Angela and Bubbles about Karen, they pretend they have not seen her in months. It is obvious both of them are drug addicts. They claim that Karen is, too. They act hostile and cold towards John. Even though they are clearly lying, they continue to insist that they have not seen Karen in a long time.
