There are about 320 guerrillas and VC regulars stationed at Ap Bac, dug in with a system of fox holes and other defensive barriers, and ready for a fight. The Viet Cong battalion commander knows that the ARVN/American forces will be attacking them soon and quickly takes defensive measures to counter-act the effort.
