The Bend in the River

• Yvette comes to Salim one night when he has already gone to bed. She is in evening clothes and was at a party. After they make love, she speaks strangely.

• Salim beats Yvette before she leaves; later she calls to see if she should return to Salim's flat.

• Zabeth comes to town and is afraid for Ferdinand; she mentions how no picture larger than the President's is ever printed in the newspapers.

• Shoba is concerned about skin blotches but Salim sees they are trapped by their isolation. Salim books a flight to London to see Nazruddin.
